The Professional Photography Process Demystified

Many sellers and agents wonder what actually happens during a professional real estate photo session. Understanding the process helps you prepare effectively and get the most value from your photography investment.

Before Arrival: Photographer's Preparation

Professional real estate photographers prepare before even arriving at your property. This includes:

  • Researching your property's location and key features
  • Checking weather conditions and planning for optimal light
  • Preparing specialized equipment including multiple lenses, tripods, and lighting
  • Reviewing any specific shot requests or property highlights

Upon Arrival: Assessment and Setup (15-20 minutes)

When your photographer arrives, they'll:

  • Walk through the entire property to plan the shooting sequence
  • Make minor adjustments to optimize the space (adjusting blinds, turning on lights)
  • Determine which rooms need supplemental lighting
  • Plan exterior shots based on sun position and property orientation

The Photography Session (1-3 hours)

Exterior Photography

Typically, photographers begin with exterior shots, capturing:

  • Front elevation from multiple angles
  • Backyard and outdoor living areas
  • Unique property features like pools, shops, or views
  • Aerial shots if drone photography is included

Interior Photography

Moving inside, the photographer will:

  • Set up tripods and lighting for each room
  • Shoot from multiple angles to find optimal compositions
  • Focus on selling features like kitchens, primary suites, and living areas
  • Capture architectural details and built-in features
  • Take multiple exposures of each composition for later HDR processing

Post-Processing (24-48 hours)

After the shoot, significant work happens behind the scenes:

  • Selecting the best images from multiple exposures
  • HDR processing to balance interior and exterior light
  • Color correction and vertical alignment
  • Sky enhancement and lawn greening when necessary
  • Removal of minor distractions or temporary flaws

Image Delivery

You'll receive fully processed, high-resolution images suitable for MLS, websites, social media, and print marketing. Most shoots include 25-50 final images depending on property size and package selected.

Understanding this process helps you appreciate the technical expertise involved in creating magazine-quality real estate images that showcase your Treasure Valley property in its best light.
